IMMUNIZATION IN WEST GONJA DISTRICT

A three day immunization exercise for measles and vitamin A supplementation had ended successfully in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region.

The exercise was part of efforts to eradicate measles in the district and nation as a whole.

Children between the ages of 0 to 5 years were targeted for this exercise.

685 children under the age of 1 year and 16,903 children between the ages of 2 to 5 years were immunized respectively.

A total number of 17,588 children representing over 96. % were immunized in the district.

In all, a total number of 200 communities and 40 Fulani settlements were covered.

GIRAF HOLDS A WORKSHOP

Governance Initiative for Rights and Accountability in Forest Management (GIRAF) held a training workshop for about 30 participants selected across the West Gonja District of the Northern Region.

GIRAF seeks to promote the Rights, Roles and Responsibilities of local communities living within and around forest areas.

The workshop was aimed at educating members on how to manage the forest effectively.

The workshop was expected to educate members on;

- How to control the forest against bust fires
- Mange commercial charcoal burning
- How to manage the environment and forest degradation


some of the rights of Communities within and around forest areas mentioned were as follows;

- Collect and use forest products for domestic purposes with the permission at the
forest manager.
- Benefit from share of royalties that companies pay to the government for local
development projects.
- Influence the selection of contractors to harvest timber in the area etc.

ASSET MANAGEMENT AND FACILITY MAINTENANCE TRAINING

A training workshop was organized by the West Gonja District Assembly for the District Works Department (DWD) and Core Staff of the assembly to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills to appropriately manage assets and other facilities provided by the District Assembly and other development partners in the district.

the workshop was in fulfillment of one of the core activities to be under taken under component one of the Local Service Delivery and Governance programme (LSDGP).

Asset Management and Facility Maintenance planning is one of the capacity building activities that can enhance the ability of personnel to improve upon the implementation of the LSDGP.

The LSDGP is a programme under the Ministry Of Local Government which is aimed at providing communities with facilities such as minor roads and culverts amongst others.

Participants were taken through the significance of the subject, Best Practices and Actions for Maintenance amongst others.
