WEST GONJA DISTRICT MARKED 55TH INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSSARY

Ghana’s Independence is a day to be remembered for providing peace, Freedom and Justice. A day which ignites Ghanaians with dignity and self- esteem. A day that marked the end of terror and inhuman treatment of forbearers and a day which stands tall in the National Calendar and offers us the opportunity to take stock of our achievements and shortfalls for guidance in our strive for development as a nation determined to reach higher heights.

The West Gonja District was not left out of Ghana’s 55th Independence Day celebration on 6th March 2012 when all and Sundry paraded at the Town’s Park in the District Capital Damongo to mark the celebration.

Moreover, The Anniversary was mounted by more than 2000 school children, workers, market women, security services and backed by Damongo Senior High School Cadet Corps. The occasion was then graced by the kings and queens who were colourfully dressed in their apparels, and which different cultural dances were beautifully displayed.

Addressing the parade on theme “Sustaining Peace and Democracy for National Unity and Development” the District Chief Executive Hon. Adam Mutawakilu stated that, the theme for the celebration in his opinion was appropriate because, Peace and Democracy are bedfellows; there cannot be democracy if there is no peace.
He added that Ghana has gone far in its democratic dispensation, which has been worldwide acclaimed and hence Ghanaians should not abused what have been taken long years to achieve.

Hon. Mutawakilu again explained that the biometric registration was to promote peaceful election and all eligible voters must do well to participate in the biometric registration. He advised those who do not qualify for the registration not to attempt to register, neither should individuals also attempt to register twice. “You can assist Ghana’s Democracy to move forward by complying with the electoral laws of the country” He stressed.

He climaxed his address by commending all the students and teachers, the security personnel as well as Voluntary services and other civil society organization who participated in the parade saying it is a sign of Patriotism and love for Ghana.
