The nationwide new biometric voter registration which
opened on the 24th of March 2012 to 4th May 2012 has ended successfully
in the North and West Gonja Districts of the Northern Region.
Twenty Seven (27) registration centres were opened for
the first round. The districts have a total of 105 registration centres.
Figures gathered from office of the Electoral Commission
indicates that, a total of Thirteen Thousand, two hundred and ninety - five
(13,295), eleven thousand, one hundred and fifty – five (11,155), eight
thousand, two hundred and forty - two (8,242) and eight thousand, eight hundred
and fifty – two (8, 852) people registered at the end of the first, second,
third and four phases of the exercise respectively.
This brings to a total of forty one thousand, five
hundred and forty - four (41, 544) people who registered in the two districts.
Out of this number, twenty thousand, four hundred and
eighty - two (20, 482) people registered in North Gonja and twenty one thousand
and sixty – two (21,062) people registered in West Gonja.
Challenges encountered at the various polling stations
were not different. This ranged from faulty machines to slow entry of data by
personnel, inaccurate data provided by eligible voters and inadequate
registration materials in the last phase.
The exercise was slow during the first three days of
phase one but progressed steadily afterwards.
According to the district electoral officer, fifty –
five (55) challenge forms were completed.
Generally, the exercise has gone on smoothly and
peacefully in the district.
